Nonsurgical Facial Rejuvenation — Neuromodulators (Botox/Xeomin/Dysport), Chemical Peels, and Fillers

Nonsurgical Rejuvenation

While surgery can be extremely effective, many patients are also interested in nonsurgical methods to rejuvenate the face. Fortunately, there are many treatments which can provide a natural and pleasing result without the downtime of surgery. These options are particularly well-suited for younger patients without significant excess of skin.

Many of these treatments are synergistic, and can be thought of as “preventative” or “maintenance” therapy – like periodic upkeep on a house or a car, small and incremental treatment through nonsurgical methods can preserve a youthful look for many years and delay changes of age.

Fillers can be composed of hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, or other materials. The net effect of a filler is to provide volume to a part of the body which has deflated with age. The fat pads in the face are particularly susceptible to hollowing with age, stress, or weight loss, which leads to a gaunt look. While fillers do not provide any “lift” to the facial structures, filler injection can be thought of as facial sculpture – revolumizing these deflate areas can provide an excellent aesthetic result instantly in the office.

Neuromodulators (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport)

Neuromodulators are derived from botulinum toxin, and are used to temporarily weaken the action of muscles in the face. This can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lines, or dimples in the face. Areas particularly amenable to treatment include the “11” lines of the brows, forehead and smile lines, bunny lines, and chin dimpling.  Prevention is often better than cure, and periodic, low-intensity treatment even before deep lines and wrinkles appear can preserve a youthful appearance for many years.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are similar to laser surgery <link> in that they remove the outermost layers of skin which are affected by wrinkles, folds, scars, and discolorations. This allows smooth, tight, and youthful skin to be regenerated, which provides a dramatic aesthetic improvement. Acne scars, sun spots, and fine lines are particularly amenable to treatment with peels.
